Nostra Domina Dolorum
Our Lady of Sorrows
Mater Dolorosa

Today is September 15th the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows.

The Two Women
G.K. Chesterton

Lo! Very fair is she who knows the ways
Of joy: in pleasure's mocking wisdom old,
The eyes that might be cold to flattery, kind;
The hair that might be grey with knowledge, gold.
But thou art more than these things, O my queen,
For thou art clad in ancient wars and tears.
And looking forth, framed in the crown of thorns,
I saw the youngest face in all the spheres.

As for the picture itself, The blessed Mother has a crown of thorns on Her head because I thought it very appropriate and I was inspired by this picture: [link]

In the top left-hand corner you can see the three crosses on Calvary (at least, I hope you can, the printer might have cut those off) And at the bottom left corner you can see the Immaculate Heart of Mary surrounded and pierced by a crown of thorns. I think there are 7 thorns that are actually piercing Her Heart. These stand for the Seven Dolours of Our Lady. There is also a sword passing through Her Heart, though it may be hard to see. It’s as prophesied by Simeon: "This Child is destined to be the downfall and rise of many in Israel, a sign that will be opposed - thou thyself shalt be pierced with a sword" (Luke 2: 34).

From the Dolorous Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ, from the Meditations of Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich:

After the death of Jesus:
“What words can, alas, express the deep grief of the Blessed Virgin? Her eyes closed, a death-like tint overspread her countenance; unable to stand, she fell to the ground, but was soon lifted up, and supported by John, Magdalen, and the others. She looked once more upon her beloved Son—that Son whom she had conceived by the Holy Ghost, the flesh of her flesh, the bone of her bone, the heart of her heart—hanging on a cross between two thieves; crucified, dishonoured, condemned by those whom he came on earth to save; and well might she at this moment be termed ‘the queen of martyrs.’” – Page 269

“During the time that the nails were being forcibly removed by blows of the hammer, the Blessed Virgin, Magdalen, and all those who had been present at the Crucifixion, felt each blow transfix their hearts. The sound recalled to their minds all the sufferings of Jesus, and they could not control their trembling fear, lest they should again hear his piercing cry of suffering; although, at the same time, they grieved at the silence of his blessed lips, which proved, alas too surely, that he was really dead. When the body was taken down it was wrapped in linen from the knees to the waist, and then placed in the arms of the Blessed Virgin, who, overwhelmed with sorrow and love, stretched them forth to receive their precious burden.” - Page 285

I would *HIGHLY* suggest reading the meditations of Blessed Anne Emmerich, they are truly profound, and help you, at least, to appreciate more, the great suffering that Christ went through to save us. Also, much of the movie “The Passion of the Christ” was based off Emmerich’s visions. They can be found here:

From “The Poem of the Man-God” Volume 5, by Maria Valtorta (a mystic who received her visions* in 1944)

“His [Jesus’] abdomen is now motionless. Only His thorax still heaves, and laboriously and with difficulty… Pulmonary paralysis is increasing more and more.

And fainter and fainter, sounding like a child’s wailing, comes the invocation: “Mother!” And the poor woman whispers: “Yes, darling, I am here.” And when his sight becomes misty and makes Him say: “Mother, where are You? I cannot see you anymore. Are you abandoning Me as well?” And they are not even words, but just a murmur that can hardly be heard by Her Who with Her heart rather than Her ears receives every sigh of Her dying Son, She says: “No, no, Son! I will not abandon You! Listen to Me, My dear…Your Mother is here, She is here…and She only regrets that She cannot be where You are….” It is heart-rending.”
-Page 619 and 620

“The mother is standing near the anointing stone caressing, contemplating, moaning, weeping. The flickering light of the torches illuminates Her face now and again, and I see large tear drops stream down the cheeks of Her ravaged face…..[Mary to Her dead Son Jesus] “ Poor Son! How many wounds!...How much You have suffered! Look what they have done to You!...How cold You are my Son! Your fingers are ice-cold. And how motionless they are! They seem to be broken. Never, not even in the sound sleep of a child, or in the heavy sleep after working as an artisan, were they so inert…And how cold they are! Poor hands! My darling, My love, My holy Love, give them to Your Mother! Look how lacerated they are!....Oh cruel men! Here, give Me this wounded hand of Yours. That I may dress it. Oh! I will not hurt You…I will use kisses and tears, and I will warm it with My breath and My love.” – Page 630

“’Jesus! Jesus! Jesus! Where are You? Can You still hear Me? Can You hear Your poor Mother, Who is now shouting Your Name, after keeping it in Her heart for so many hours? Your holy blessed Name that has been My love, the love of My lips….And when I did hear it, [Jesus’ voice] as faint as that of a new-born lamb, tremble in the cold night in which You were born, I became acquainted with the abyss of joy…and I thought that I had become acquaited with the abyss of sorrow, because it was the weeping of My Baby Who was cold, Who was uncomfortable, Who was sheding His first tears of Redeemer, and I had neither fire nor cradle, and I could not suffer in Your stead, Jesus. I had but My lap as fire and cushion, and My love to worship You, My holy Son…..When you were a little baby, I used to lull You singing: “Jesus! Jesus!” Which harmony is there more beautiful and holy than this Name, which makes the angels smile in Heaven? To Me it was more beautiful than the song, so sweet, of the angels the night of Your Birth. I could see Heaven in it, the whole of Heaven I could see through that Name. And now, saying it to You Who are dead and cannot hear Me, and You do not reply to Me, as if You had never existed, I see Hell, the whole of Hell. See, now I understand what it means to be damned. It is to be able no longer able to say: “Jesus!”…..But how shall I be able to put up for three days with the knowledge that You are dead? You, My Life, for three days dead?”

The Seven Sorrows or “Dolours” of Our Lady:

1. The Prophecy of Simeon over the Infant Jesus
2. The Flight of the Holy Family into Egypt.
3. The Loss of the Child Jesus for three days
4. The Meeting of Mary and Jesus along the Via Dolorosa (the Way of Suffering) or the Way of the Cross
5. Mary watches Jesus suffer and die upon the upon the Cross
6. Mary receives Jesus when he is taken down from the Cross
7. Mary watches Jesus be buried in the Tomb

her expression is very meaningful, but at the same time, she is only human, the crown of thorns and nails that pierced Christ's hands and feet were not for her. i don't get why she is put so importantly in the Catholic church. even John the Baptist told us not to look to him because someone who is greater than him was going to come. wouldn't that be the same for Mary?

CREEEEEPER. lol a day will come when a guy who is not a creeper will look at you.. in the same way.. only less creepery ;P

Oh, yes, of course Mary is only human! We don't worship her or anything silly like that, that'd be idoltry, then Catholics would be pagans and not Christians! And the nails and the crown of thorns, what do you mean by saying that they weren't for her? They were for all of us! Jesus suffered and died for us! I had her holding the nails and wearing the crown of thorns because she suffered with her Lord; Our Lord. After all, she was His Mother. Any human Mother would weep uncontrollable if she had to watch her Son die and terrible, extremely painful and ignoble death!

And another thing other christians don't seem to get about Mary, Mary points us to Jesus. When we pray the Rosary, not only does our relationship with Our Mother (since Jesus gave his Mother to us for our Mother on the cross) increase, but, more importantly, our relationship with Jesus deepens! Mary always points to her Son, in everything that she did. At the Wedding of Cana she said, "Do whatever He tells you." She tells that to us all the time. And when we honor Mary, we honor Jesus. Jesus is honored when we honor His Mother. Wouldn't you be happy if someone honored your mother? It makes you pleased. Same with Jesus.

And the reson we honor Mary so much, is because she loved Jesus most perfectly of all creatures created. She is the crowning glory of all of God's creation. Mary is a model for us (as all the saints are) to show us to Jesus and help us on our path of holiness and to love Our Lord more and more.

And to borrow from "The Lives of the Saints"

"There was between Jesus and His Mother all the union and interchange of kinship and tender love which exists between a fond mother and her child. Added to this was the intense love with which she loved Him as her God, so that we may truly say there never could be a love between a human soul and God greater than the love between Jesus and Mary.

Mary is not God. She is a mere creature. But she fulfilled the will of God for her perfectly in all that she did. That is why the angel Gabriel hailed her as "full of grace."

 Thank you so very much! I tried to make her very sad.....though, not emo as we think of it, I don't think she looks emo, she looks.....just, sorrowful beyond sorrow. A sword truly pierced her heart and soul. Imagine the tender love she had for Our Lord, to see Him tormented with such inimaginable agony and suffering, for our sake too! And not because we merited it either, just simply because God could not help Himself, He had to save us because His pity and tremendous love for us could not be withheld! Oh, sweetest Jesus, perfect and holy, spotless lamb for the sacrifice!

Thologically, not to say that God HAD to save us or anything, but I think on his great love for us, I don't think He would have done anything else though. God is too loving. :) to you Emoraven, God BLESS!!!!

well of course she would be extendeningly sorrowfull. i think any mother would if she had to witness such horrible things done to her son. thats a good point too, he couldve choosen to to suffer in such a way, but he did it anyway without interference cause he did, and does love us that much. and you are in my prayers as well!

waahhh. so much to say, such sore fingers xD
well, i know that DA is not exactly the place to talk about this, but, whatever *shrug* still cool.
i was mostly put off by her wearing the crown than the idea that the crown was meant for us. not meant for us to wear, for it is not our burden and can never be, but to recieve the gift of life through the blood it shed from Jesus. She is not worthy to wear the crown. No one other than Jesus is. No matter how much they suffered.
but other people than Mary point us to Jesus. it is their job. their calling. our calling. to point others to Jesus, and so someone else did for us in the physical sense (say a pastor or our parents etc.) and as for honoring Mary to honor Jesus, i would only agree with that relectantly just because it says in the Bible that when we feed the poor we have fed Jesus and when we clothed the naked we did the same for Him. and so in honoring her you may see that, but she is not worth honoring. noticing, sure, but she is not greater than the Son she bore? of course not. and the Spirit who made her with babe and the Father that is apart of the trinity, Mary was only a tool. clay. and she was used by the potter in a very special way, but that does not make her above anyone or able to do anything in praying to her. i believe it is only a way to defocus from God, because focusing on anything other than God makes it an idol. even if it's God related, because sin can and will twist a beginningly good thing into a bad thing. its the way it works
also, you only put 'more perfectly'. i can't argue with it, but i can say, it isn't comparing to each human that makes us human, its comparing to God, who IS perfect. loves perfectly and all. in comparison, she is nothing, and no matter how specially she was used, she is nothing in view of God. (like you said. so in this way i find it kinda contradicting to what you are saying)
and there are not all accounts of Mary. she was a sinful creature. who can say she fulfilled her job perfectly? i hardly believe it. i mean, if she doubted in her heart at any one moment, her ';perfect' fulfillment would be ruined.
